The John referenced above is son of Patrick, grandson of Edward McCollough I.   John McCollough was born in Madison, or Anson, Maine, to Patrick and Bridget McCollough/McCollor, on July 4th, 1822. He was the fourth child born to them, and the third son.   When he was one year old, the family moved to Quebec, one of many moves to Canada and back to Maine, as detailed in the Patrick McCollor page of this site.     Five years after his mother's death in 1848, John's father moved back to Maine for the last time.  It was 1850, and John was about 26 years old. It is believed, at 26, John was at the time, still living with his father.    At first, upon the family's return to Maine, he worked as a farmhand for Daniel Hayden near Madison. He either changed occupations after only weeks or months, or kept this job along with a new one, that of a Riverman in the Skowhegan, Maine, area, on the Kennebec.  He lived at that time in the Skowhegan Hotel.

Two years after his return to Maine, on November 16, 1852, he married Margaret McCarthy, in Quebec, Canada. She was the daughter of Charles and Mary (Kennedy) McCarthy.  We do not at this time know if they stayed in Quebec long, or perhaps were just there for the marriage or a short time, for we do know in 1862 they were back in Maine.  I n 1862 he joined the 24th Maine Infantry fighting for the Union Army during the Civil War. He was a private, and fought for only nine months before being discharged.   John returned from the war and after living with his wife and family in Maine for awhile longer, they finally settled in St. Georges, Canada.   Interestingly, many of their grandchildren and children married into the Poulin family, in St. Come, Quebec. In the 1901 Canadian census, large families of Poulin's live in the same neighborhood as John, Jr.'s family.  In this same census John and Margaret, well into their seventies, are found living with John, Jr. and family.   We do not have record of the date of John's or Margaret's deaths, although it appears they lived beyond the normal lifespan for the time. In fact, many of the vital dates for this branch of the family are unknown to us.
