PATRICK McCOLLOUGH / McCOLLOR b. __/__/1816 In (Londonderry?) Derry, Ireland. d. 7/27/1856 at Skowhegan, ME. at about 40 years old, buried _____?.	The Patrick referenced in this tree is Patrick, son of Edward McCollough II.  He and his cousin Nancy married, thus they share a tree on this site.   Patrick McCollough was born in Derry, Ireland to Edward, Jr. and Jane McCollough, about a year previous to the family's journey to Canada and subsequently to Maine.  Nancy was born March 1, 1815, barely three weeks prior to the voyage.  They were married August 15, 1840 in Industry, ME. Industry vital records lists Luther Ryan as the officiating clergy.  In the early years of their marriage, they lived in Canada, where he worked as a farmer and a woodsman, trades it is assumed he continued when later they returned to Maine.    While in Canada, Nancy gave birth to three sons: Michael, John, and Barney.  Daughter Bridget was born later, in Maine.   The Loss of Patrick   Nancy would spend the last 46 years of her life without Patrick. After about 16 years of marriage, Patrick drowned July 27, 1856 in the part of the Kennebec River called "The Great Eddy", saving the life of one of their sons.   He was about 42 years old, Nancy was 41.  Nancy was left alone to raise her four children, the oldest being 14 and the youngest, Bridget, just a baby.  It can only be imagined, how difficult it was to be a single mother in the mid-nineteenth century.  She remained single for five years. Patrick Sands   In 1861, Nancy married a man named Patrick Sands, however, the marriage ended, probably with is death (confirmation not made through records), sometime before 1870, the year the U.S. Census recording Nancy as living with her son, Barney. In that census, a 21 year old Barney is listed as head of household.  Also living in the home was John and Bridget, along with two boarders, and invalid by the name of Mary Benjamin, and a 2 year old boy, James Bean.  I would like to find out more about little James, to see if he was a ward of the government, a "foster child", an orphan, or what. It's interesting, also, that the Benjamin name shows up as a boarder in at least one other place on the family tree.   In 1962, her oldest sons, Michael and John, enlisted in the Civil War.  Only John would return, her first born Michael, would die only about a year after enlisting, of disease.  Later, Bridget, too, would preceed he mother in death.   By the time of the 1880 census, John and Bridget had married, and only Barney remained single. Barney would marry later in life, perhaps because he felt obligated to car for his mother all of those years. It is speculated in a written history of the family that Barney was the the child saved by Patrick on that fateful day in 1856, and thus Barney felt a particular responsibility to provide for his widowed mother.  The home where they lived was in a location called "Mahoney Hill" in Bingham which in the 1980's was referred to in the Nelson & Stigman published genealogy of the McCollor family, was "a beautiful tree farm".  This is particularly fitting as so many McCollor men worked with wood in one trade or another.     Nancy Passes On   It was in Barney's home Nancy passed away, on March 4, 1903, only three days after celebrating her 88th birthday. Her death, of heart failure, was sudden. It had been 46 years since her Patrick's tragic passing, and at least 33 years since being widowed a second and final time. Nancy lived to see the birth of 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.  Nelson and Stigman so fittingly describe her as "a hardy pioneer woman who saw many changes in her lifetime", a lifetime spanning three countries and a better part of a century wherein many advances and much history took place.    It is undebatable, McCollor women were strong, as evidenced generation after generation. Nancy, who entered Maine as a small baby strapped upon her mother's back as they treked through the wilderness to their new lives, was certainly no exception.   Research note: A family tree posted on Ancestry.com, called "Kenney Family Tree" (Spencer, Cates, Moniz) lists another son our records do not seem to include. They claim a boy named James was born sometime in between Michael and John. If anyone can clarify if there was indeed another boy, or confirm there was not, please EMAIL me.

MICHAEL McCOLLOR b. 1/7/1841 in Beauce, Quebec, Canada. d. 3/6/1863(?) at Bonnet Carre, LA at about 20 years old.

RESEARCH NOTES:  Michael was a private in the Co. H. Maine 24th Infantry Regiment, enlisted to fight in the Civil war 10/13/1862.   He died of Typhoid fever in Louisiana, just 20 years old. Michael's enlistment record describes him as having dark complexion, blue eyes, auburn hair. He was 5' 5 1/2" tall. The date we have for Michael's death is the exact date his regiment was mustered out, causing me to question if the date has been misrecorded. Michael's civil war pension application gave Nancy (his mom) and an Edward McCollor as beneficiarys. I don't know which Edward as it says "brother" but Nancy did not have a son "Edward".

Marries MARY ELLEN MAHONEY, Canadian born daughter of PHILLIP (abt. 1817 Ireland - 9/20/1905) and MARY AMBROSE MAHONEY (abt 1830 - 12/9/1914.  Mary Ellen was born in Cranbourne, Quebec, Canada, and immigrated in 1870.   1873 -  First child, Nancy, born on the 14th of November at Solon, ME.   1876 -  First son and second child, Marcus "Mark" born at Bingham, ME.   1879 -  November 30th, third child, Bertie, born in Bingham.   1882 - Fourth child, John Carroll, Jr., born May 7th in Bingham.   1884 -  Fifth child, Nellie, born at Solon June 16th.   1886 -  Sixth child, Bridget "Beatrice", born at Bingham August 19th.   1888 -  Seventh child, Frank, born March 5th at Bingham. (date uncertain)   1889 -  Eigth and final child, Barnaby Bernard "Barney" born March 8th. (date uncertain)   1903 -  His mother, Nancy, passes away March 4th.   1910 -  Daughter Bertie passes away at only 30 years old, July 23rd. RESEARCH NOTES Barney's wife Ellen had 2 children from her first marriage, and no children with Barney. The 1900 census tells us Barney married to a woman named "Helen". I believe this is Ellen, just another error by a census taker - the census's are great sources of information yet the spelling should never be based on the census listing alone.  The census claims Ellen was born in Maine in December 1848 to an Irish father and a Maine born mother.  This is what I am basing my record on. Also in the 1900 census we see that Nancy is living with them in Skowhegan, ME. The 1920 census lists Barney and Ellen living in Bowdoinham, ME., so we do know that Ellen survived to this point, although we don't know her death date and place. I have no real record data on Ellen's two children, but the 1920 census of Fort Fairfield, ME a man I believe could be her grandson: FREDERICK "FRED" TARDY and his 22 year old wife MARY E. TARDY. In 1920 they have  two small children: FREDERICK D., 5, and ANNA E., 2.  I believe I have copies of these censuses or can find them easily and will post them here as soon as I can.

RESEARCH NOTES  In renovating the page I somehow lost what vital information I had for Bridget, and will have to fill it in as soon as I can find the info again.  A family tree on ancestr.com provides a death date for Bridget of 1931. Two other family trees on ancestry.com list it as 1900.  I'll try to pin it down, if anyone has the correct information, please EMAIL me. The 1880 census of Bingham, ME lists the household as John (a laborer), Bridget, and little Nancy at 2 years old.  One family tree on ancestry.com claims that Nancy died before her 3rd birthday. We might assume that Mary was born after 1880 but I don't know the age or place.  There is a listing in the 1900 census a Mary E. Roach, 19 year old boarder in the Wellington Brown household at Merrill Plantation, Aroostock, ME. In the 1880 census we learn that living next door are Barney (described as a farmer), Mom Nancy, and MARGARET SAND, a 34 year old "boarder", also described as (and I've never seen this before or since) "town pauper".  This is quite tragic and, in my opinion, insulting but things were different then. Can we assume Margaret is a relative of Nancy's second husband, Patrick Sands? Perhaps his daughter? NANCY M. ROACH b.__/__/1878 at ______?, ME.  d. __/__/____? at ____ MARY G.
