Peter McCollor made a special promise to a fellow soldier and good
friend on the battle grounds of the Civil War. As the friend lay dying of battle wounds, he asked Peter to name a son afer
him. Peter kept his promise later, when Ulay was born. Ulay was one of the few in the family tree named for someone other
than family. Born
in Maine in 1876, a two year old Ulay traveled with the family to Roseville Township in Grant County, Minnesota. Just as his
brothers and sisters, Ulay grew up living a simple life, working on the family farm and attending grade school. Just
like the others, Ulay was a hard worker, and worked for others when not working on the farm. Even at his busiest, he still
made time to get rowdy with his brothers. Together with L.J., Ulay perfected a recipe for moonshine, and was known for a little
too much taste-testing. Just as all the other children of Peter, Ulay loved to dance, and also played the fiddle which he
had begun learning at age 8. He is said to have been handsome, with the thick, curly black hair, a moustash, tall and muscular
build, and of course the dark dark eyes courtesy of his mother, he had no problem finding dance partners. He was also
quite fond of baseball, and is reported to have been quite skilled at it. ELIZABETH His
brother, Claud, dated a young school teacher Elizabeth Gray, and at some point Elizabeth began dating Ulay and Claud began
dating Edith Boerner, who Claud married in 1898.

Ulay courted
Elizabeth for some time, until, in the winter of 1899, restless with the simple farming life, he left his family an Elizabeth
as well, to work the granite quarries in Spring Valley, Wisconsin. MARRIED LIFE The newly married couple began farming on their own at the Olsted Farm in MacsVille
township. Ulay purchase some cattle from his father. In August of 1901 Elizabeth gave birth to their first child, a son. Little
DeForest would soon be called Forest. Two years after, Lester LeRoy came into this world, only to leave it five months later,
accidentally suffocated to death. Elizabeth was delivered the next year of another son, and for the next 13 years, the family
grew, but not entirely without tragedy. Their first daughter, Violet, died of the flu in the fall of 1907, at six months of
age. In September of 1918, Ulay registeref for the WWI military draft. From his registration
documents we learn he was of medium build, had black hair and black eyes, just as mentioned before, and names Elizabeth as
his closest relative. For many years, and
despite his impetuous spending habits, Ulay and Elizabeth managed well financially at farming. However, in 1929, the national
fall of the economy devastated if not closed many farms. Ulay's previous spending and the desperate economy, forced him to
take drastic measures to save his farm. Some family stories claim he sold off some of his land. However, census records
appear to prove his son Donald took over. According to the
census, Donald also took over care and support of his younger siblings, Alice, Leonard, and Ethel, and his older brother,
Harry moved in (or rented a house on the property?) as help on the farm. It's not clear through the census's exactly which
brother owned the farm and at what time. It is said in family stories that Elizabeth
threw her husband out of the house at some point. They are living together in each of the census's, so if they did seperate,
it would have been for a while between census's or after the 1940 census. It would be hard not to blame her, considering the
stress of spending about 15 years of her life pregnant with one child or the other and financial stress brought on by
Ulay's excessive spending. To top it off, Ulay was increasingly difficult to live with. He had been drinking heavily for years,
and became increasingly violent and boisterous. Ulay bounced back somewhat, building and
living in a dance hall just a few hundred yards from the farm, selling his moonshine. Please
note, this biography is born out of conflicting sources regarding their seperation and whether they actually did part.
If anyone can clarify any of this biography details, please do!

What the Census's tell us: 1880 Census: Roseville,
MN. This census is much less informative than subsequent ones. Ulay is 3 years old, second youngest in the Peter McCollor
household. Any of the children old enough are helping on the farm. 1910 Census: Ulay is raising his young family on the family farm. They
have a 35 year old "servant" (farmhand?) in the household whose name I cannot read. I THINK it may say Alix Aiken.
1920 Census: Ulay's family is still living and working on
the farm. 65 year old N--? Nelson is living with them as "servant". This census, like the previous ones, do
not provide a lot of information. 1930 Census: Ulay,
53 and Elizabeth, 56, are living in the household of son Donald, 21, who at yet remains unmarried and is farming. Also living
in that household are Donald's youger siblings, Alice E.: 17 yrs old, Leonard, 15, Ethel, 13. Ulay's
eldest child, DeForest, is raising his young family very close by, possibly renting a home on his brother David's farm (formerly
Ulay's farm?). The brother's are working the farm together. An interesting thing is listed on this census: it says that although
DeForest and his wife Elsie can read and write, they did not attend a school. I'm not sure if this is a mistake or not. 1940 Census: Ulay and Elizabeth, both in their 60's, are together (family
stories say they seperated around 1930 which doesn't ring true with the census's. Unless, they only seperated a small time,
or it happened post-1940). The farm is owned not rented and valued at $1200. Young Leonard is the only one living with
them. He would not marry until he is middle aged.

RESEARCH NOTES: Family describe Alice as being active in her community. A
family tree on ancestry.com gives a birth town of Morris, Stevens Co., MN, for Raymond which conflicts with family records.
Also conflicting is where he died, listed as Otter Tail County, MN, rather than Fergus Falls. He (and Alice as well?) is buried
at Zion Cemetery, Hoffman, MN.
