NOTE:  I still have to review and make corrections to states/cities as I have some cities attributed to the wrong state. I will do this as soon as possible. Better brush up on my geography!

ALLAN McCOLLOR
b. 8/27/1847 at ? son of THOMAS KENNEDY McCOLLAR AND MARY (POOLER) McCOLLOR, d. Christmas Day 1912 in Duluth, MN and was buried there. Allan was a farmer by trade, in ND, and held a steam license in 1900.

BIOGRAPHY

Babe, as Margaret had been dubbed very early on, is said to have been her father Peter McCollor's favorite child, and was always at his size while she was growing up. Her mother died of pneumonia when Babe, the youngest, was but 2 years old. In 1889 her father married again, to Margaret Furman.

BABE GROWS UP

Babe would find her husband as the result of a family tragedy. When Babe was about 7 years old, her uncle Tom and Aunt Mary had both died in the harsh frontier of North Dakota, leaving 6 of their 8 children orphaned. Despite supporting their already very large family, Peter and his wife Maggie took all 6 in. The other 2 of the original 8 were the youngest of Tom and Mary's children and went to be cared for by another family.  Eventually Babe and her cousin Allan were drawn to each other, and married. Marrying a cousin, even a first cousin was not all that unusual amongst the Catholic settlers as the area was predominately protestant.

While they were living at the iron ore fields of Naswauk, on Christmas day, Allan unexpectedly died, leaving Babe with four strapping young boys to support. Babe found herself in immediate need of work. Life was rough on the range, but Babe was able to draw upon her great cooking abilities, learned from her father and stepmother.

Babe made the difficult decision to put the boys in a boarding school while she went off to the mines to earn money as a cook. The parting must have been agonizing.

b. ?? AT ? Son of ?

During the summers when school was not in sessions, the boys would rejoin their mother at the mines.  A photo below shows Babe and her boys during one such visit.

The miners were a motley crew hailing from all parts of the world and from all sorts of circumstances. Some were great men, others were criminals hiding out from the law or attempting to begin a new life.  Not all miners were trustworthy.  When Babe was not one of a very small group of women working the mines, she was the ONLY woman working there. It was necessary for Babe to hold her own.  Babe was known by her family for carrying a small pistol under her skirt, and was not afraid to use it should circumstances ever require.

A SECOND CHANCE AT LOVE

Eventually, one man stood out from the crowd, a gentle and kind man named Jim Vincent. They quickly fell in love, and were marriedThe boys had reached their teen years and went to work in the mines, as their own sons would. When the boys has children of their own, out of respect for Jim, they named some of their sons after him.

Babe's career as a cook in the mines lasted thirty-five years.  She and Jim worked hard for the American Dream, building a sweet little home in Nashwaulk, MN, with the assistance of her father, A.P. and other McCollors. Kevin McCollor, who supplied many of the photos on this page, writes: "It (the house) has been the home to a number of Babe's children, grandchildren, and boarders she took in." He and his brother, Kyle, were raised in it. The house has never left the McCollor/Vincent families, Kevin and Kyle are currently the caretakers. They use it several times a year, especially on the 4th of July when the town hosts a large annual celebration. To family, friends and neighbours, the home that Jim and Babe built is referred to simply as "The House".

Jim died, and heartbroken, Babe began to spend more time with her sister Tina, a hardy frontier woman in her own right. In many ways Tina's life had played out quite similarly to Babe's: she too had lost a young husband early on. Carl Ouse had died before he and Tina had been blessed with children. After his death, Tina, too, took to cooking, and ran a bakery in St. Paul for thirty years.

Together, the two sisters traveled, returning home whenever the wind blew them in that direction,
where they were always welcomed with much fan-fair. While home, they would make the rounds, visiting the entire family. It was a good life, and the two women certainly deserved it.

Babe died in 1961, leaving behind a legacy of spirit, strength, and love. She was a true frontierswoman, and a true survivor.

ARTHUR EUGENE McCOLLAR
b. 4/13/1931 at Lansing, MI. Served in Marine Corps in Korea as a Corporal 11/30/1951 to 11/3/1953. Bartender by trade. d. 2/23/1990 in MI. Buried at Wood National Cemetery, Milwaukee, WI.  m. 1/5/1956 at Cook County IL. MARIANNE JOAN CARBER (aka JOAN MARIE CARBERRY and other combinations of her name). b. __/__/ 1934 at ? dau. of ?  d. ? (They divorced in Florida in 5/1963 and she remarried 2/26/1975. As of 2012, family sources say she resides in Pheonix, Arizona.)

RESEARCH NOTES: Different documents give different variations of Marriane's name, I'm not sure I have the correct one listed above. The marriage record gives a marriage date for her of 1/5/1956, which contradicts some family records. I do not have family records of her parentage, but found a 1930 census of Portland Maine that listed a Joan Carberry as 3 year old daughter of Peter J. and Helen T. Carberry, sister to Helen Carberry aged seven. I know from years of research not to trust the spelling of surnames on census records!
