Edward McCollor was born June 7, 1828, in Solon, Maine, the seventh child of Patrick and Bridget McCollor.

He was ten years old the year his mother died. His family was living in Canada at the time, and two years later moved back to Maine for good. Edward became a farmer on the East side of Solon, on "Parkman Hill".

When he was in his late twenties, on November 10, 1855, he married Margaret Murtha. Margaret was born in 1829, most likely in St. Georges, Quebec. She was the daughter of Thomas and Esther (McGor) Murtha who, like Edward's parents, were Irish immigrants.

In 1862 when six of his brothers and two of his nephews joined the Army to fight in the Civil War, according to family folk lore, the family got together and paid Edward $300 to stay home and look after all the families. children. T,he youngest, Edward James, was just five years old at the time of her death.prior.

Edward and Margaret would be married almost twenty-one years, when she died on Arpil 19, 1876. She was about 47 years old, and had borne seven children. The youngest, Edward James, was just five years old at the time of her death.

According to Stigman and Nelson* an 1883 map of the Solon area shows Patrick's and Edward's farm(s) to be  located in sections 104 & 105, and had come to be known as "The Old McCollor Farm".

After his father, Patrick, (who never remarried) retired from farming, he lived with Edward and his family.  Upon Patrick's death, Edward buried him in Solon.

In 1900 76 year old widowed Edward was living with his youngest son, Edward and wife Sarah. He  died on May 26, 1903, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Solon where Margaret had been buried more than two decades prior.

Lineage Chart

How to use this chart: I am a person who remembers and undertands data that is laid out graphically rather than text outline. There are many good family tree templates out there that use a chronological text outline, but I have chosen here to do it the old fashioned way. Where you see a name that has been turned into a link, you will know that I have created a lineage page for this person, and you may click on that link to access that page.

BABY BOY McCOLLOR
b.12/7/1892 at Solon, ME. d. ? Twin of Robert, born living, no name at time of birth.

RESEARCH NOTES ON ROBERT:

ROBERT EVERN McCOLLOR
b.12/7/1892 at Solon, ME. A twin.
d. 4/13/1980 at St. Petersburg, FL, at the age of 87.
m. 9/23/1935 at Portland, ME to EDNA PEARSON CUSHING, b. 10/15/1896 at Portland, ME, dau. HORATIO WHEELER AND FANNIE D. PEARON CUSHING d. 11/6/1978 at st. Petersburg, FL No children.

RESEARCH NOTES ON ROBERT:
Professional baseball player for 1 or 2 years, owned a body and fender shop in CA during early '20's, realtor. He registered for the draft at the age of 24, on June of 1917. When he registered, he claimed an invalid father, and was described by the registrar as being tall and having blue eyes and brown hair. The 1920 census gives a birthdate of 1883, but other records indicate 1882 including his draft card. Living with him at that time is his sister Madeline and a servant LILLIAN SWAIN. This name is very familiar, maybe she is mentioned in connection with another McCollor somewhere and I can't quite put my finger on it. According to a 1945 Florida census, Robert and Edna were living in Florida by the time he was 52 and she was 48. At the same address is a person whose name I can't read. That person is right around the same age, at 51.

MADELINE B. McCOLLOR
b. about 1899, at ?
d. ? at ?.
never married

RESEARCH NOTES ON MADELINE:
1900 census shows a "Bennie M.", one year old female. This must have been a nic name for Madeline?
1910 census reports her name as Madeline B.
1920 census has her living with her brother, Robert with only a young "servant" Lillian Swain.
1930 census reports Madeline and two other young people as a "roomer" in Portland, ME in the household of William Harris. She is not listed as employed.
1945 census of Florida population. I believe I can make out her name, living with her brother Robert and his wife, Edna.

ESTHER M. McCOLLOR
b. 8/10/1860 at Solon, ME
d. 4/7/1927 at Solon, ME, at the age of 66. Buried at Evergreen Cem.

ERNEST CARL
b. 9/26/1879 at Embden, ME
d. 9/15/1973 at Solon, ME
m. 11/17/1934 to MILDRED PADHAM GEORGE, b. 12/20/1902 dau. of MARK AND GRACE PADHAM d. 1/22/1986 in York, ME. Mildred had been married as a teenager to PERRY GEORGE previous to marrying Ernest.

RESEARCH NOTES ON ERNEST:
Ernest was adopted by Esther and Warren at the age of 8 or 9 and kept his birth surname. 1920 census shows him still living with them at the age of 40. When he registered for WWI draft, he stated he was a farmer and Herbert Carl as his nearest relative. His biological parents were Oswald and Esther Bickford Carl. His biological mother died in 1888 which could be the reason Ernest was up for adoption. He had an older brother, Herbert, and three younger brothers, Granville, Elmer and Earl. We are privileged to have his autograph book, click here.

JOHN C. McCOLLOR
b. 11/16/1862 in Solon, ME.  Trades included farming, cooking for river drivers, maple syrup-ing, woodsman.
d. 3/4/1930 at Solon, ME, at the age of 67, of "acute indigestion". See his death record above.

The 1930 census was taken just after John's death. Clara is shown as head of the household, and also listed in the household were Rena, 34, Wayne 24, "Bain", 23, and Lyndon LaCase, a ten year old "boarder" born in Canada (basically a foster child).

RENA ETHLYN McCOLLOR
b. 4/24/1895 at Solon, ME teacher. See Rena's autograph above.
d. 5/18/1977 at Waterville, at the age of 82, buried at Solon (Evergreen?).

Research notes: In 1930 census, at the age of about 34, Rena was living with her mother and is teaching in the public schools. It seems apparent she never married or had children of her own. In the 1940 census of Providence, RI, I see a "Rena McCullor (a common census mispelling) that I believe is she. The age is the same, and she is a teacher from Maine. I havn't confirmed she was in RI at a that time, but am pretty sure this looks like our Rena. It appears she is living alone.

m. 5/24/1897 at Skowhegan, ME to SARAH HANNAN, b. 3/__/1875/6 in Canada, dau. of HUGH AND MARION HANNAN, d. 12/19/1940 in Solon after suffering of heart disease for several years. See Sarah's death record above.

Research notes:  The 1900 census shows Edward took in and cared for his elderly father, who died a few years later.

The 1930 census shows Sarah's brother HUGH HANNON (52 years old) a laborer, and sister, MARION HANNON (46 years old), living in Edward's household in Solon. Both Hugh and Marion are listed as single, something I find interesting considering their ages.  In 1930 the family owned their home and Edward is listed as being a farmer.
