Angelia McCollor McQuillan

A STRONG, HARD WORKING WOMAN

This heading could be used for almost any of the McCollor women, it seems. It is apparent this McCollor woman deserved the credit, as she is recalled as being tireless in her activities, without ever a complaint, and well respected and loved by "all who knew her".

She was born October 9th, 1862, in Solon, Maine, the oldest child of Peter and Margaret (McGarrity) McCollor. She attended schools in Maine, and was 17 when her mother packed up the children and they began their journey to the homestead their father had already prepared for them in Minnesota.

Not far from where they lived, in Macsville Township, brothers John, James, and Peter McQuillan were farmers. John wasted no time in wooing Angelia, and in the spring of 1880, the two were married.  A year later, the two moved to the farm of John's parents, located just south of the Twin Cities, in Dakota County .

A FAMILY IS BORN

It was at the McQuillan family farm in Dakota County that John and Angelia began their own family, starting with Louis, born August 27, 1881. Angelia was not yet 19 years old. They would follow Louis with another ten children, all but one were boys. Finally, and undoubtedly, by the time Angelia and John were convinced they were destined to raise only boys, the last child to be born to the family was a girl.

In 1887, the McQuillans sold the farm, and moved to St. Paul. John and his brothers entered the plumbing business there, which seems like a very drastic change for them all. Perhaps the farming business had become too economically difficult for large families to support themselves on.  Angelia lived in St. Paul the rest of her days, her life centered around her family, and died there at the age of 59.

ANGELIA, AS REMEMBERED

In the Stigman/McCollor book, Patrick McQuillan mentions many photographs existing of Angelia. They reported show her as about 5'5" tall with dark hair and dark eyes, and very pretty.  She is remembered by her family as being a gracious and non-discriminating host who had a passion for cooking. One family tradition was the "Saturday Night Bean Feed" that was well attended by as many of her offspring as were able to come. She is also remembered for her "McCollor sense of humor", and for her devotion to the Catholic faith, which she insisted her children share.

FROM A McQUILLAN WEBSITE:

"John the grandson of Mary McQuillan and the son of John McQuillan and Margaret McAloon. Johns spent his first nine years on a farm in Illinois and the next 13 years on the farm in Apple Valley, MN. At age 22, he went with his brothers to Grant County, near Herman, MN and farmed there about 4 years. While there, he met Angelia McCollor and married her. She was 18 at the time. Angelia was the daughter of Peter and Margaret H. (McGarrity) McCollor. They returned to his father's farm in Apple Valley and stayed there until 1887. He then sold the farm and moved to St. Paul and entered the plumbing business. The family lived on Rondo Avenue and moved to Selby Avenue where the plumbing shop was located. John and Angelia had 11 children, 10 boys and one girl. The oldest was born when Angelia was 19 and the youngest was born 26 years later when she was 45 years old. John purchased the house at 405 Selby in about 1912. It became famous for the Saturday night "bean feeds" when all the family would return home. All of the sons learned the plumbing trade at the family shop. John and Angelia are interred in Calvary Cemetery in St. Paul, MN"

Research notes: A user-submitted family tree on ancestry.com provides a death date for Louis of January 14, not June.  See his WWII draft registration card above, which is kind of comical since he was 60 at the time. I guess it was to register him as a person too old to be drafted? A census of 1920 claims Louis' mother and father were born in Ireland, which was not true.

* There are more than one possible resources on Ancestry.com: a 1920 census shows Louis and Jospephine with one son: George, b. about 1907 in MN.

Research note: It is difficult to find information on George past 1920. I had hoped to find a 1930 census, but found none. I did find a Sgt. George T.  of Jackson, MI, killed in the Pacific during WWII 5/21/45. This George is described as a white Catholic. I'll try to confirm more information.

Research Note: At the time he registered for the draft for WWI Sept. 12, 1918, John was a plumber but was not working in the family plumbing business. He was at that time working for the Park & Playground Dept. of St. Paul. He is described as medium height and medium build with brown hair and brown eyes. He changed professions sometimes between 1920 and 1930 from plumbing to drug sales.

d. 12/7/1905 at St. Paul, MN of tuberculosis. buried where? Unsure of death date.

Research note: A 9/12/1918WWI registration shows a Joseph Michael McQuillan of Heartwell Kearney, Nebraska, a banker and self-employed farm manager, born 12/25/1881 and married to Lucy McQuillan.  I think it's a huge coincidence this gentleman has the same name as our Joseph - perhaps too much of a coincidence? I'll try to find clarification of this.
