THOMAS, "THE BABY"

Thomas was the twelfth and last child of Patrick and Bridget. He was fifteen months old when his mother passed away, and less than four years old when his father moved the family back to Maine for good.

Thomas was raised by his father and his older siblings, and like his older brothers, he started out as a farmer, alongside his father, just East of Solon. At 22 years old, like most of his older brothers, he too enlisted in the Civil War as a Private, and with three others into Company H, the 24th Maine Infantry Regiment on October 13, 1862, mustering out the following August from Augusta. Much of that regiment's service took place in the south, particularly in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi.

Much later, Olina who was recorded as "Olive", and son Ross C. (Rosslyn Clifford) still living at home, applied for Thomas' war pension, see document below.

MARRYING MARY

Thomas survived the war and returned to Maine (date unknown), and in October of 1868, he married Mary Pooler, a woman who is said to have been part American Indian. She was born in E. Broughton, Quebec, Canada February 13, 1847, to parents Lawrence and Rose (Grimes) Pooler. For Pooler links, please refer to the Google Links page of this site.

Married only 16 years, they managed to have nine children, eight of whom were born in Maine.

Posed for the camera are four men, three of which we have names written on the back of the photo: Allen McCollor (Babe's first husband), Chet (Chester, Allen's brother), AP McCollor (brother to Babe). Based on Allen's early demise, we assume this photo must be from around or before 1912. The little girls are a bit of a mystery. Kevin speculates that they may be AP's daughters Margaret and Ethyl. The location of the house is also a mystery, but again using the approximate date of the photo and the known history of the family, the house may be in North Dakota.

The 1880 Federal census reports the family farming in Moscow, Maine. Phineas and family are reported on the same census sheet just a few doors away. Perhaps they farmed together?

Soon after, in 1883, the family had moved all the way to Stephen, Minnesota where Thomas began farming by the nearby Tamarac River. Thomas's cousin, Michael McCollough, had settled there about a decade earlier, and had made a life for himself as a fur trapper and trader with the Dakota Territory Indians.

Mary died in childbirth in August of 1884 giving birth to their ninth child, Thomas F. McCollor. The baby also died, and both mother and child were buried the private cemetery owned by Michael McCollough. Mary left behind eight children, two of which were still under the age of five. At least two of the children were taken in by other families or individuals, including four year old Rosslyn.  John Whalen, at the time a bachelor, took in little Rosslyn to raise as his own.  A future brother in law of John Whalen, Pierce Joseph Sinnott, took in young Arthur to raise. Mr. Sinnott had only a few years prior emigrated from Ireland to Stephen. See this link for more information on Pierce Sinnott and Arthur McCollor.

In December 1887 Thomas married for the second time. He and Olina Evans McCollor would be married only two years before his death at 12 noon, Christmas day, 1889.  He was only 45 years old. He had been visiting his brother, Peter, in Grant Co., Minnesota when he had fallen terminally ill.  Peter brought Thomas by train back home to Stephen, where he was buried beside his first wife and their baby son, Thomas F., in the McCullough (McCollough?) Cemetery. He was given a military funeral, and, "according to Peter ... a good Irish wake".*  Some of his children stayed with Peter to be raised with Peter's family. On the Civil War Pension Index file record, his wife is listed as "Olive" and there is a minor child, Ross  C.

POSTCARD FROM ALLEN BELL McCOLLOR TO A.P. McCOLLOR

This postcard was written and mailed about a month before Allen (son of Thomas) died, and may have been one of the last things he wrote. In it he references other McCollors and their whereabouts. Transcription below and scan courtesy Kevin McCollor, who chose to include all the gramatical errors, so that it may read exactly as Allen wrote it.
